K-12 Counseling Advisory Council

K-12 Counseling Advisory Council

Purpose:

Explore the current K - 12 School Counseling Plan

Group 1: Roles/Goals of School Counseling Plan: An opportunity to reflect on the role as a counselor; wonder about proactive versus reactive roles; wondering about the breadth of roles/responsibilities of counselors - do we have enough support; so many choices regarding post-secondary plans - overwhelming opportunities for students, is there fear, is there judgment around some post-secondary options

Group 2: Activities/Data in School Counseling Plan: Focus on being proactive, there are many aspects to the duties of a school counselor that are not captured in the plan; there are some activities that are captured but, because of covid, have not been actualized over the last three years, missing: support for students re-entering from mental health placements

Group 3: NYSED Regulation Changes: Discussion of access to a school counselor, no representation of supporting the diverse student population, Rhinebeck meets the regulations in plan and theory, though the day-to-day crisis demands tend to pull counselors away from these mandates, discussion of data needed (qualitative and quantitative) from parents and students, difficult of referral process (to specialists) and what is in the realm of support at school versus private/community-based.
