What Is Special Education?

Special Education is a mechanism to provide services to address the educational needs of children in the District who have identifiable disabilities, from age 3 until age 21, or until they receive their high school diplomas. Following appropriate evaluations, students may be eligible to receive educational services to address the student’s needs within the educational setting. The committee that determines special education eligibility is called the Committee on Special Education (Committee on Preschool Education). This is a multidisciplinary team composed of the student’s parents/guardians, a representative of the district, school psychologist, teachers, and providers. Each committee is unique to the individual student.

If a student is found eligible to receive special education services, an Individual Educational Plan (IEP) is developed at the CSE meeting. This plan is individualized to the student, highlighting strengths, needs, identifying annual goals and outlining the programs, services and needed accommodations. Each year the CSE meets to write an IEP for the upcoming school year and every three years the District conducts a re-evaluation of each student receiving special education services.
