BMS Students Complete 10th Annual "Knitting Art Club" Project to Benefit Vassar Hospital NICU
What began as a small, but heartfelt gesture to help those in need during the holidays, the 10th annual “Knitting Art Club” has resulted in a large collection of handmade blankets!
Bulkeley Middle School art teacher, Jennifer Famiglietti, began ‘Knitting art club’ as an outreach project for members of the BMS Art Club. Over the last ten years, students, parents, grandparents, teachers, staff, family, and friends have come together to offer a wish of peace and warmth to others during the holiday season.
This year, Mrs. Famiglietti and her knitters spent four after-school sessions choosing yarn and knitting, for some working with yarn for the first time. People outnumbered chairs as more than 50 participants filled the art room knitting, crocheting, and sharing tales. Their efforts will warm many babies in the NICU. “Having a daughter spend time in the NICU was the inspiration for the project” Mrs. Famiglietti said.
In the words of Mrs. Famiglietti to club contributors, “I am deeply moved by the generosity and support of all of you. I would like to commend all of you for extending your time in such a selfless way to help out babies.”
The blankets will be brought to the Vassar Brothers Medical Center on Christmas Eve.
